We are delighted to welcome Jared Sanders to our team. Jared is an Edinburgh based jeweller with more than 20 years experience. He is versatile in many jewellery making styles and techniques, with current ranges including gem set fine jewellery, upcycled pieces (vintage costume jewellery modified and restored) and his Embody Range – a collection of pieces exploring themes of love, loss and memory. His jewellery is currently on display in several art galleries in Edinburgh.
Jared will be teaching regular silver smithing workshops for us throughout the year. His workshops will provide you with the basic but essential skills of working with metal. If you are serious about making jewellery then you will not want to miss out on these workshops.
May 1st, June 4th
These courses offer a choice of two modules. Students who have already completed “Module 1” can attend and cover “Module 2”. Please state at the time of booking which module you would like to complete on the course. Each module costs £120 which includes the cost of tuition, all tools and materials.
Module 1: Piercing and Basic Raising
These are the first techniques taught to aspiring Silversmiths and jewellery makers. They may seem tricky at first, but with some tuition you will be rewarded with new skills. In this first module you will learn the basics of piercing (sawing) shapes from sheets of copper and silver, and raising parts of the shape with doming hammers to make a three-dimensional object.
You will learn;
* How to easily insert the blade into a piercing saw frame
* Professional technique for using a piercing saw, and cutting out decorative shapes.
*How to correctly use a doming hammer, as well as hints and tips for making decorative tool marks on pierced shapes.
*Techniques for finishing
*Soldering a jump ring
By the end of the class you will have two wearable pendants, one copper and one silver, and the satisfaction of a day spent learning new metal smithing techniques which can be expanded on in later, more advanced modules.
Module 2: Fabricating Three – Dimensional Forms with Wire
This module covers how to construct a design in wire, how to solder the components together, and how to shape the piece into a three-dimensional form.
You will learn;
* How to accurately fabricate wire components from a design plan.
* Shaping and soldering the components together to create a three-dimensional form.
This project is the basis of a more advanced module, which will involve more design considerations and an introduction to stone setting, to be announced soon.
More dates will be coming soon! But if you would like to book into these fabulous classes please pop in to see us, call us on 0131 2285058 or visit our website.
Love,
